Gala Show G20 Update
What to expect during the G20 (June 25, 26 and 27, 2010)
As you know, and are reminded daily, the G20 Summit is a major Toronto Event. So much so that Security Zones cover most of downtown and traffic and getting around in Toronto will be really difficult.
The good news is that the Gala Show, at 1523 Bloor Street West, is well out of the restricted and security areas.
Even so there will be traffic and transportation problems and we have some recommendations for all of our Gala Show guests.
- Give yourself plenty of time
- Take the subway (also avoids parking problems)
- Check the news for any updates
- Plan your route to the Lithuanian House so that it does not run through G20 Security Zones

About the Traditional Arabic Music Ensemble
Created in 1973 by George Sawa and the late Ebrahim Eleish, this chamber ensemble performs traditional Arabic music repertoire including the instrumental sama'i, bashraf (peshrev), longa, tahmila, taqsim, folk and classical dances; as well as the vocal Andalusian muwashshah, qad halabi, and folk and popular songs of Egypt and Syria. The ensemble has performed in venues across Canada, the USA and Europe and has been broadcast by the CBC.
Website Here CBC Broadcast
The concert will include:
· 17th-century classical instrumental pieces from the Ottoman court
· Egyptian Sufi sacred dances
· early 20th-century Egyptian dances and instrumental pieces
· popular music from the 20th century
To produce a historical performance of this repertoire, the ensemble will use an Egyptian qanun (psaltery) dating back to the late 19th/early 20th century, as well as percussion instruments of this era, that is, instruments made of animal skin, wood, clay and brass.
The ensemble's CD The Art of the Early Egyptian Qanun contains much of the above repertoire, and will be sold following the performance.

Seasonal
SOIREE
On Wednesday, December 7 at Lula Lounge, the students and teachers
from TorontoBellydance were joined by our bellydance friends (what
a great crowd!) to celebrate the season while raising almost $900
for Sistering (www.sistering.org).
We had a blast! We were treated to delicious canapes by Lula's,
great Arabic music from DJ Tony, and fantastic performances by Marion,
Marie, Janey, Meggie, Eden, Kathy, Tina, and Shu'la. Additionally,
the crowd gave it up for Hannan and a very saucy Mrs. Claus (aka
Roula). We were all blown away by the amazing skills of our special
guest for the evening, Valizan!
Thanks everyone for attending!
Bellydance
Swap Meet
The bellydance swap meet on December 11th at Hannan's Studio was
a great time! We had costumes, scarves, Belly dancing Barbies by
Linda, cds, books, and lots of odds and ends! Everyone came away
with a fantastic bargain find, and it was just a lot of fun to hang
out, eat too much chocolate, and try on fantastic costumes. We'll
do it again soon!
